Welcome to the St Kentigern's Parish Website
Easter Message From time to time the Church designates a particular year to devote herself
especially to celebrating some important aspect of the Catholic faith.
Following in this tradition, Pope John Paul II announced a Year of the
Eucharist on the Feast of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) in June 2004. The year began with the World Eucharistic Congress in October 2004, in
Guadalajara, Mexico. It will end with the ordinary assembly of the Synod of
Bishops held in the Vatican this coming October. The theme of the synod is
"The Eucharist: Source and Summit of the Life and Mission of the Church." In this extended celebration, all Catholics are called to honour God’s gift of the
Eucharist, to receive it more faithfully, and to reflect more deeply on its
meaning in their lives and in the life of the Church. So what does this mean to
us as individuals? We believe the Eucharist, the Mass, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe
in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ's
Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God.
It is a sad truth that for some of us in the pews, receiving the Eucharist can
become routine. It is God's greatest gift to us; yet over time, its familiarity
causes us to lose the wonder and joy that meeting Jesus once inspired. We now
have a wonderful opportunity for renewal with the Year of the Eucharist. How
can we develop a closer relationship with God? As we approach Holy Week we begin our Triduum with the Institution of the
Eucharist on Maundy Thursday. On this occasion Jesus gives us the powerful
example that the Eucharist and service of one another are intimately linked. As
we become united with Christ, then we are even more closely united with one
another. Our love and service for each other is a sign of the real presence of
Jesus in our community. Each of us has an individual responsibility to build up the body of Christ.
Please reflect on your role and mission within this parish community. With every best and blessing for a Happy and Holy Easter Fr John
